3 Reasons Why Happy Workers Should Be Looking

happy face 2

“As a career expert and coach, my clients often hear me say; ” when possible, look for a job when you’re happy.”

Most of us look for a job when in need.  Then we go on a job hunt, rekindling networks, dusting off resumes and fine tuning interview skills. If you’ve been out of the job market for some time, this can be overwhelming. Finding a job can take up to 18 months in some cases.  And the biggest challenge is overcoming looking desperate and thus undesirable in the process.

Happy employees or those content in their positions, are attractive.  Recruiters often see passive seekers (those whom are not looking) as desirable candidates. Besides attractiveness, looking when you’re happy has other benefits.  Below are 3 beneficial things looking for a job makes us do that keep us valuable:

  1. Polish up your professional image:  Job searching forces you to get your resume, online profiles and networks in order.  Chances are, if you’re happy, you haven’t enhanced your resume in some time.  Going through the process will keep you current on your value to your organization as well as create a strong professional brand. You never know when the best opportunity may come your way. A polished image will set you up to take advantage of it.
  2. Build strong connections and networks:  Networking is critical to job searching and the best time is when you don’t have to.  How many times have you heard that?  However, most of us wait until we’re in need. This is the worse time. 70% of jobs come from our connections.   You never know what your future may hold.  Building a solid network when you’re happy is your safety net and when you need it, it’ll be there.
  3. Get interview ready.  Job interviewing requires us to articulate our accomplishments in an engaging way. Whether you’re looking for a  job or not, you should interview everyday.  Using elevator speeches and highlighting your contributions should be part of everyday dialog with supervisors, team members and high-level leaders.  Your network is also a great place to ensure your successes, qualifications and potential are known. When you’re happy, you speak with more confidence and that goes a long way in boosting your worth.

So If you’re happy, get out and look for a new opportunity.  It won’t hurt and it’ll give you a chance to polish your image, maintain strong networks and be interview ready everyday.  All of which benefit the happy and those looking.  Stay happy!
